Question types in English

Question plays a very crucial role in communication.Answering skill is considered as easy as questioning skills.Infact we have to know this if we want to improve our communication skills.So i hope this article will provide some ideas to improve our questioning skills.

Here i'm going to explain about the question words for each tenses available .The basic structure of question is 


  • If auxiliary verb exists in the sentence ,the question format will be  auxiliary verb+subject+verb
  • If auxiliary verb not exists in the sentence ,the question format will be Do/does/did +subject+verb
  • These all are come under yes or no question type.
We can classify questions as 2 broad  types .
a).Yes or no questions(short answers)
b).Wh questions (Long answers)

a).Yes or no questions
            This kind of questions mostly receive very short answers with "yes or no".

(e.g) 
Did you go to home?(question)
Yes,I did.(answer)
So we will see this vividly below.I have categorised it based on tenses . Hence it is easy to remember .

1.Present Tense
       
i)Simple present tense
                         Do i  +verb?
                         Do we  +verb?
                         Do they  +verb?
                         Do you  +verb?
                         Does she  +verb?
                         Does he  +verb?
                         Does it  +verb?
(e.g)
i speak english
do i speak english?

ii)Present Continuous tense
                        
                       Am i  +verb +ing?
                       Are you +verb +ing?
                       Are they  +verb +ing?
                       Are we  +verb +ing?
                       is she +verb +ing?
                       is he  +verb +ing?
                       is it  +verb +ing?

I am working hard
Am i working hard?
iii)Present Perfect tense
                        Have i  +Past participle verb? 
                       Have you  +Past participle verb?
                       Have they  +Past participle verb?
                       Have we  +Past participle verb?
                       Has she  +Past participle verb?
                       Has he +Past participle verb?
                       Has it  +Past participle verb?

I have spoken with him

iv)Present Perfect continuous tense
                        Have i been  +verb +ing?
                       Have you been  +verb +ing?
                       Have they been+verb +ing?
                       Have we been+verb +ing?
                       Has she been+verb +ing?
                       Has he been+verb +ing?
                       Has it been+verb +ing?

I have been playing badminton

2.Past Tense
       
i)Simple past tense

                         Did we +verb?
                         Did they +verb?
                         Did you +verb?
                         Did she +verb?
                         Did he +verb?
                         Did it +verb?

I worked in india
Did i work in india?
Note:
if we use "did" then no need to use past form of verb.Just check the above example.

ii)Past Continuous tense

3.FutureTense

b).Wh questions
                         This is nothing but the words such as what , when, where,how,why,who and so on.If you add these words in front of the above "yes or no" questions it will change to "wh" question and give the elaborate answer.

(e.g)
Where will you go?(question)
I will go to India (answer)


So we have to keep this in our mind.I don't say to  memorize it.Just know it.Use it whenever and wherever you get time.Find out the usage of these.Once you find the usage then you won't forget.It will be helpful for us.
